Needle felting has been a huge hit for 2018. This is a wonderful craft for children and adults. You can made 2-d and 3-d art depending on your supplies. Anyone can learn, so here is a quick run down on getting started with needle felting crafts.
You will need:
- finger protectors (to prevent accidental needle stabs)
AWESOME KIT DEAL:
If this is your first time trying this out, I recommend doing the 2-d art so you get used to the needle felting. Start out with a simple picture in mind…in my example I created a bird.
How I Made This:
I cut out the picture background square and added rectangles that were rainbow color ordered to serve as a bright background. Then separately I cut out the body, head ,and beak out of flat felt. I set the bird head on the background piece. Then I took the needle and stabbed along the edges to get it to roughly stick together.
Next, I took the pre-cut beak and placed it on the background felt. I stabbed the outline of the piece to attach to my picture. Next I started cutting small pieces of the roving felt to shape and color the body. I twisted the roving to create some texture and then start stabbing it in until I felt I added enough to make my felting creation complete.
This is my very first creation, and is by no means amazing, and proves that anyone can do it and have fun while creating some original pieces.
TIP: Only poke the needle through the felt straight up and down, if you try and come in at a side angle the needle may break. The rough points along the felting needle help interweave the felts as it goes in and out of the felt.
If at any point you are unhappy with the way something is placed it is easily ripped apart by hand.
I have found that the flat sheets of felt are great for an outline of what you are trying to create and the background. The roving can then be added to create textures, depth, and dimension.
You could also add buttons, sequins, use colored thread to detail your artwork even further. If you have not yet shopped at Wish.com for art supplies, you will definitely wanna check them out. You will find random supplies at amazing deals every time you go.
If you want a more specific felting project:
There are individual kits you can buy that will include everything you need to create that specific item. This is what I consider your 3-d needle felting projects. I would HIGHLY recommend rubber finger protectors because this kind of felting is extremely easy to stab your own fingers and boy does it hurt. But this will teach you step by step how to make a specific item out of roving and may offer you inspiration for creating other cool projects.
